President Lee Myung-bak said Friday that Korea will be able to rank among the world’s top five countries in the cultural contents industry by 2012, if government officials are determined to do their best.
"Considering that Koreahas ranked ninth in the world’s market for culture and contents, We can raise the ranking to fifth by 2012, if the government and related organizations and professionals join forces together" Lee said, speaking to officials of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism at a policy briefing session in Chuncheon, Gangwon-do.
"The Culture Ministry has thus far failed to play its role in the development of the culture and contents industry. After absorbing the software policy function of the Information-Communication, Ministry, the Culture Ministry has further grown in importance. Civil servants are capable of doubling their productivity, depending on their attitude and way of thinking."
"Tourism is alsoone of thefuture growth industries, but the tourism deficit has worsened, with 12 million Koreans going abroad and got merely 6 million in-bound last year. It is a very serious problem," said Lee.
Lee also emphasized that the government’s public relations efforts should now be focused on elevating the nation’s brand value in the global market.
