TV 광고를 보면 외국인 앞에서 당황하는 성인들의 모습을 자주 볼 수 있다. 그와 대조적인 모습으로 어릴 적부터 영어교육을 받은 아이들은 당당하게 외국인과 대화를 한다. 하지만 여기서 왠지 모를 어색함을 느끼게 된다. 그저 부모의 욕심으로 그 아이들의 입에선 영어가 새어나오지만 정작 모국어에선 어색함을 감출 수 없다.

입구부터 하바놀이학교 동대문원은 달랐다. 꽃과 나무, 별로 장식된 벽과 천장, 그리고 아이들이 뛰어놀 수 있는 GYM까지, 형형색색으로 뒤덮인 하바 동대문원의 실내는 아이들의 감성을 자극시키고 발달시키기에 충분했다. “모든 면에 있어서 발달이 극히 두드러지는 유아기엔 색과 모양, 그리고 자신이 속한 분위기에도 아이들은 큰 영향을 받습니다. 그래서 내부 인테리어 공간을 쾌적하게 하고, 아이들이 편히 머물고 건강하게 뛰어놀 수 있게 자연채광이 잘 들도록 만들었습니다.” 이문선 원장은 지난 17년간 유아교육을 진행하면서 체득한 노하우를 지금 운영하고 있는 하바 동대문원에 모두 쏟아 부었다고 한다.

각각의 다른 느낌을 가진 교실은 한창 수업 중이었다. 파란 눈과 노란 머리를 하고 있는 외국인 선생님과 대화를 나누며 나와는 다른 얼굴, 피부, 말투, 문화에 자연스럽게 적응하는 아이들, 바이올린 현을 손가락으로 꾹 누르며 연주를 하는 아이들, 발레복을 입고 선생님을 따라하는 아이들, 동그란 책상에 모여앉아 하나의 주제에 대해 자신의 생각을 자유롭게 말하고 있는 아이들까지,, 하나의 공통점을 쉽게 찾을 수 있었다. 바로 얼굴에 담은 미소다. “제 개인적인 교육신념은 행복한 경험으로 아이들에게 창의력을 키워준다는 것 입니다. 아이들이 짖고 있는 저 미소가 바로 그 창의력의 근간이 되는 것이죠. 내 아이가 하바를 다니면서 즐겁게 놀이하며 배우고, 창의력까지 얻는다면 그보다 더 좋은 교육이 있을까요?”

수업을 참관하는 내내 기자가 본 아이들은 서로 다른 교실에 있었고, 다른 교육을 받고 있었지만 모두가 즐거워하고 있다고 느끼는 것을 어렵지 않게 알 수 있었다.

통합교육 통해 사고 up!

놀이와 체험중심의 선진국형 교육 통해 친밀감 up!

하바 동대문원의 가장 큰 특징은 통합교육이라는 것이 이문선 원장의 설명이다. 그가 말하는 통합교육은 한 가지 주제를 가지고 다양한 활동, 예를 들어 물고기를 주제로 할 경우 ‘하바인지교구’를 통해 색변별력, 형태변별력, 수변별력을 가질 수 있는 교육을 진행하고, 과학시간에는 실제 물고기의 촉감, 크기를 관찰하게 된다. 또, 신체교구를 통해 직접 배를 만들어 낚시를 해보거나 스스로 물고기가 되어 소/대근육을 자연스럽게 움직여 도망쳐보기도 하고, 표현활동 시간에는 물고기를 그려보기도 한다.

“이 과정 속에서 아이들은 물고기에 대해 여러 가지 생각을 하게 되고, 유아기의 일반적인 아이들이 생각하는 단순한 생각의 폭을 넘어 여러 상황과 모습을 상상할 수 있는 방법을 익히는 것이죠. 즉, 하나의 주제를 확장해가며 창의력과 상상력을 키웁니다. 담임선생님과 각 과목의 전공선생님은 아이들의 사고 확장을 도와주는 역할을 하게 되고요.”

그렇다. 하바놀이학교 동대문원은 각 과목마다 전문 강사진을 배치하고 있으며, 다문화 수업을 진행하는 강사진의 경우 3개 국어가 가능할 정도로 실력자들이다. 또, 외국인 선생님과 함께하는 수업의 경우에는 한국인 선생님들이 항상 배치돼 아이들과 선생님 사이의 소통문제를 해결하고, 유아들의 숨겨진 재능을 발굴해 각각의 아이들이 가진 소질을 키우는데 주력하고 있다. 소수정예를 고집하는 것도 이 이유에서다. “선생님이 관리할 수 없을 정도의 인원이 모이면 하바식 교육은 무용지물입니다. 한명의 아이들도 소홀이하지 않고, 개인별 맞춤 교육을 추구하기 위해선 소수정예가 필수죠.”

특별한 이중언어교육으로 졸업할 때쯤 의사소통 가능

하바에 들어섰을 때 가장 놀랐던 모습은 아이들이 놀이를 하면서 선생님과 영어로 자연스럽게 대화를 나누고 있는 모습이었다. 일반적인 주입식 교육으로 완성된 영어라기보다는 우리가 어릴 적 말을 배울 때 그랬듯, 친구들과 어울리면서 체득한 것처럼 자연스러워 보였다.

“유아들이 언어를 주입식 교육으로 익히게 되면 사회성, 인성, 감성에 악영향을 받게 됩니다. 모국어를 습득할 때와 마찬가지로 체험과 친밀한 놀이를 통해 자연스럽게 익히는 것이 무엇보다 중요하죠. 그래서 저희는 친밀하게 느끼는 주제를 기초로 한 창의영어 프로그램을 사용합니다. 이 프로그램 역시 전문 강사진을 통한 체계적인 교육으로 졸업할 즈음엔 외국인과 의사소통에 어려움이 없어지는 것이죠.”

이 외에도 짐, 게임, 아트, 과학, 뮤지컬드라마, 발레, 뮤직 등도 하바에서 자랑하는 수업의 일부다. 이런 수업들의 가장 큰 모토는 자연스럽고 행복하게! 배울 수 있는 교육이다. “제가 부모의 입장에서 내 아이를 믿고 맡길 수 있는 유아교육기관을 만들어 보자는 취지로 시작하게 된 지금의 하바는 자연을 실내로 옮겨 놓은 듯 한 인테리어와 젊은 부모들이 가장 중요하게 생각하는 창의적 교육과 영어 교육에 무게를 실었습니다. 또, 부모들이 직접 하바에 와서 자신의 아이들이 배우는 교육을 눈으로 보고 체험할 수 있도록 했고, 교사와의 적극적인 대화의 장을 만들어 열린 교육에 만전을 기하고 있죠.”

“처음 아이들이 하바에 오면 쑥스러워 자기표현에 서툰 경우가 많습니다. 하지만 노래, 춤, 체험, 놀이를 통해 자신감과 리더십을 배우게 됩니다. 가장 먼저 바다로 뛰어드는 용기 있는 펭귄의 자신감을 아이들에게 심어주는 것이죠.”

아이들의 미래는 주변 사람과 환경이 만들어 준다고 해도 과언이 아니다. 인터뷰하는 내내 그 환경과 사람에 ‘아이들의 탁 트인 미래를 닮은 하바놀이학교 동대문원’이 항상 함께 있을 것이라는 확신이 들었다.

When watching the TV commercials the scene where an adult panics in front of a foreigner can be seen often. Contrasting from such scene the children who had received English education from early age speaks with a foreigner with confidence. However, here we feel unexplainable awkwardness. English comes out from the mouth of the children's just by the greed of the parents but actually in their mother language the awkwardness can't be hidden. Children who are playing the violin by pushing the string with their fingers, children who are following the teacher wearing tutu, and even the children who express their thoughts freely on a single topic by sitting aroung the round table, the one thing can be found in common. That is smile contained in the face. "My personal education faith is to raise the creativity to children by happy experience. The smile that children has is the basis of the creativity. Is there better education if my child learns by playing and even earn creativity by going to Haba?"

During the class observation the kids that reporter saw was all in different classes, and receiving different education but it wasn't hard to feel that everyone was happy.

Through developed type education of play and experience focused intimacy up!

The largest characteristic of DongDaeMoon Haba is integrated education explained by Lee Moon Sun director. The explained integrated education is having various activity with one topic, for example by having fish as topic proceed education that can have color distinction, form distinction, number distinction through 'Haba acknowledgement teaching tool', and through science time observe the size and texture of actual fish. Also, through body teaching tool by actually making the boat try fishing or become fish it self and try escaping by using the small/large muscles naturally, during expressing activity time try drawing the fishes.

"During this process the children thinks about various things of a fish, and learn methods to imagine various situation and think beyond the width of a simple idea like typical early childhood children. Hence, by expanding one topic advanced the creativity and imagination. Each homeroom teacher and major teachers of each subject helps to expand the thinking of children."

That's right. The most impressing scene when entering Haba was that children were naturally having conversation with the teachers in English while playing. Rather than English completed by normal rote teaching like we learned to speak when we were young, it seemed natural like they learned from playing with friends. "When young children learn language through rote teaching then they receive bad influence in social ability, characteristic, and emotions. Like when we acquire mother language through experience and intimate play natually learning is the most important thing. Therefore we use creative English program that basis on topic that give intimate feeling. This program si also a systematic education through professional instructors so by the time of graduation the difficulty of communicating with foreigners disappears." Other than such gym, game, art, science, musical drama, ballet, music, and such is part of class that is proud in Haba. The biggest motto of such classes is education that learn naturally and happily." Haba today that started with purpose to make young children education institution that I can entrust my child from the perspective of a parent with interior that seem as if nature has been moved inside and emphasized on creative education and English education that young parents are most concerned about. Also allow parents to see and experience the education that their child is learning, and by opening aggressive conversation place with the teachers pursue thorough open education."

"When children first come to Haba few lack at expressing themselves because of shyness. However through song, dance, experience, and play they learn confidence and leadership. Inculcate the confidence of penguin that has courage to jump into the sea first.

It's not too much to say that people around and surrounding makes the children's future. During the interview it assured that 'DongDaeMoon Haba play school that resemble the open future of children' will always be there with the environment and people.
