Huge volunteer's power makes the new legend in the field of oil spill clean up.
According to Coast Guard officials, a total of 271,000 people, or about five times the county’s population, have so far come to Taean to scrape oil patches off the coast.
On top of that, they assist experts in their fight against the spread of oil to other fisheries and islands.
Volunteers, normally seen squatting on coastlines, range from elementary school students, popular entertainers and professional athletes to lawmakers and top university scholars. President-elect Lee Myung-bak also made a trip to the region on Thursday, helping with the cleanup and vowing that the government will continue its support when he takes over from President Roh Moo-hyun in February.
"It keeps us busy just dealing with calls from volunteer groups asking how they can help," Kim Su-gon, a county official, said.
