In a speech marking the 89th anniversary of the March 1 Independence Movement, Lee said the nation is faced with too many future-oriented tasks in politics, the economy and diplomacy to be bound by disputes over history.
"Pragmatism should be the new norm in almost all fields, including politics, the economy, diplomacy, security and labor-management relations. Formalities, inefficiency and unproductiveness should be discarded," Lee said.
"South Korea and Japan should also try to foster a future-oriented relationship with a pragmatic attitude. Historical truth must not be ignored, but we can no longer afford to give up our future relations due to disputes over the past," said the president.
Lee made the speech at a ceremony in downtown Seoul to mark the Independence Movement Day.
