Korea to speed up infrastructure construction for World Expo 2012
Dolsandaegyo (Bridge) in YeosuThe Korean government has decided to speed up construction of highways and railroads in eight areas near Yeosu and neighboring cities as the port city won its bid to host the 2012 World Expo.
The Ministry of Construction and Transportation announced Monday (Nov. 27) that it will push completion of social overhead capital support for Yeosu and neighboring Jeolla-do (Jeolla Province), in particular finishing the Jeonju-Gwangyang Expressway by 2010, one year ahead of schedule.
The ministry said it will coordinate with related budget agencies to ensure the investments, aimed at speeding up the ongoing construction of eight highways, including the Mokpo-Gwangyang Expressway which it began Dec. 2006, and the launching of new KTX bullet train lines throughout the country by 2011.
Yeosu cityIt plans to complete the construction projects of National Highway No. 17 to link Yeosu and Suncheon by 2011 and No. 77 that links Yeongnam-Jeokgeum and Hwatae-Dolsan by 2015.
The transportation ministry will further build four expressway exits to Yeosu by 2012 and new bypasses for Suncheon and Gwangyang before 2015.
According to the ministry, construction of a new access road to Yeosu’s industrial complex will begin just before December 2007 and end by December 2011. The ministry also plans to expand the single Suncheon-Yeosu railway line by 2009.
Feasibility studies for extending taxiways and runway at Yeosu Airport to permit more flights are also in the works, according to the ministry.
