송민순 외교통상부 장관은 호주 시드니에서 개최중인 APEC 정상회의 계기에 「빠뜨리시아 에스피노사(Patricia Espinosa)」 멕시코 외교장관과 양국 외교장관 회담을 가졌다.
외교통상부에 따르면, 양국 외교장관은 2005년 노무현 대통령의 멕시코 방문시 양국 정상간 설정한 ‘21세기 공동번영을 위한 전략적 동반자 관계’가 착실히 발전하고 있음을 재확인하고, 최근 경제ㆍ통상을 비롯하여 다양한 분야에 걸친 양국관계의 발전에 만족을 표명하였다는 것.
이어 송 장관은 2008년「칼데론」대통령의 한국 방문을 통해 양국간 협력관계가 더욱 공고해 지기를 기대한다고 하였고, 「에스피노사」장관은 「칼데론」대통령의 내년도 한국 방문을 검토중에 있다고 말했다.
특히 양국 외교장관은 양국이 최근 한ㆍ멕시코 전략적 경제보완협정(SECA) 협상을 양국간 자유무역협정(FTA) 협상으로 격상시켜 추진하기로 한 것을 평가하고, 한·멕시코 FTA 체결시 양국 경제·통상 분야에 있어 협력이 확대되는 계기가 될 것이라는 데 의견을 같이 하였으며, 이와 관련, 「에스피노사」장관은 우리 기업의 멕시코 투자 확대를 희망하였다.
이어 외교부는 양국 외교장관은 고위정책협의회 및 경제과학기술공동위 등 양국간 협력 메커니즘 활성화에 합의하였으며, UN을 비롯한 국제기구 진출관련 양국간 협력에 대해서도 논의하였다고 밝혔다.
한편 송 장관은 멕시코측이 2012년 여수 세계박람회 유치를 지지해 준데 대해 사의를 표하고, 중남미 주도국인 멕시코가 여수지지 분위기 확산에 노력해 줄 것도 요청하였다.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Song Min-soon had bilateral talks with the Mexican Foreign Minister Patricia Espinosa in Sydney, Australia on September 9 on the sidelines of the APEC Summit, and exchanged views on matters of mutual interest between the ROK and Mexico.
According to MOFAT, The two ministers acknowledged the progress of ‘Strategic Partnership for Mutual Prosperity of the 21st Century’ which the two leaders of Korea and Mexico adopted during President Roh Moo-hyun’s visit to Mexico in 2005.
And they also expressed satisfaction on the development of the ROK-Mexico relations in many areas including economy and trade.
Meanwhile, Minister Song stated that he is expecting the bilateral ties will be further strengthened with the Mexican President Felipe Calderon’s visit to Korea in 2008, and Minister Espinosa gave a positive answer by saying that her government is considering President Calderon’s visit next year.
In addition, 'the two ministers acknowledged the promotion of the ROK-Mexico Free Trade Agreement (FTA) to push for a ROK-Mexico Strategic Economic Complementation Agreement(SECA), and shared a common view that the FTA will increase bilateral cooperation in trade and economy' said MOFAT
'In this regard, Minister Espinosa pinned her hopes for the increase of Korean corporations’ investment in Mexico' MOFAT added.
In the meantime, Minister Song and Minister Espinosa agreed on revitalizing mechanism for bilateral cooperation such as the ROK-Mexico High Level Policy Consultation Meeting and the Joint Committee on Economy, Science and Technology Cooperation. They also discussed rendering collaborated efforts in international organizations such as UN.
Minister Song said, "We gratitude for Mexico’s support for our bid to host the 2012 World Expo in Yeosu, and asked for the Mexican government’s further assistance in creating friendly atmosphere among the Latin American nations for their support as well'
And he asked Minister Espinosa to visit Korea on an appropriate occasion, and the Mexican foreign minister also expressed her wish to invite Minister Song to Mexico.
