The Korea-Japan forum, focusing on digitization project of the 1st-edition Tripitaka of Koryo Dynasty(918-1392 AD) and 'Nanzen-ji' collection of Buddhist scriptures in History, was held from 10 to 11 November at Seoul National University, with attendance of distinguished guests from different countries.
According to organizer, the Research Institute of Tripitaka Koreana/RITK, this workshop was prepared to review the importance of 'Nanzen-ji' collection of Buddhist scriptures in Korean culture history, as well as to show up valuable achievement of digitization for various Tripitake Koreana which propelled by RITK for the past several years.
'We've highy appreciated for Japanese Nanzen-ji's cooperation toward our digitization project, the great network of Buddhism-based culture in Asia. So the both should cultivate more valuable spirits for culture through frequent exchanges in the field of Buddhism's heritage' said Ven. Jongnim, the President of RITK, through his welcoming speech.
And regarding the historical interpretation on Tripitaka, he said that at that time its contents were not from Koryo Dynasty only, but from various countries with Cosmopolitanism based.
'Four years later we will celebrate the first millenium's anneverasry of 1st-edition Tripitaka of Koryo Dynasty. So it's why all of us gathered here, so as to create the new conerstone of Buddhism's Digital-based Renaissance that nobody dare to dream of' he continued.
Meanwhile there was a lecture by Ven. Genpou Fuji, from Nanjen-ji, Japan, briefing on historical background of 'Nanzen-ji' collection of Buddhist scriptures, and followed by vigorous Q&A session.
In addition on 11 November saw the lecture of Prof. R. Lancaster, UC Berkeley, and of Susan Whitfield, Director from British Library.
