바다가 보이는 태안의 작업실. 서경자작가를 만난 날은 안개가 낀 화요일이었다. 정돈된 옷차림과 편안한 목소리로 기자를 맞이하는 서경자 작가의 모습에는 정중동(靜中動)의 고요한 카리스마가 전해졌다. 명상(Meditation)을 모티프로 자타의 경계를 시나브로 뛰어넘는 그의 색채는 블루(Blue)였다. 잊고 있었던 휴식과 고요의 세계를 증명하는 서경자 작가의 청색 시대는 소박한 정갈함과 차분함, 그 이상의 감흥을 선사하고 있었다. 마음속 깊은 곳에 남아있는 티끌 같은 불순함마저도 남김없이 씻어 내리는 청색(靑色), 그의 블루는 푸르다기보다 맑음에 가깝다.

Her BLUE, silent or pure
Western-style painter, Seo Kyung-Jah’s ‘Blue’
An atelier nearby the ocean in Taean and It was foggy Tuesday to meet Artist Seo Kyung-Jah there. With tidy look and comfortable voice, she welcomed me and I saw the calmness in the motion and could read her charisma. Her color was blue, which is crossing her borderlines with others between in and out by Meditation as a motif. A silence and a rest in the world that we forget were in her paintings, and it was blue that neat and relaxed and even something beyond them too. Blue color that washes out anything bad in deep inside, actually her blue is closer to clearness not just bluish.
속도에 저항하라. 행복해지기 위해
서경자 작가는 홍익대에서 서양화과를 졸업한 후, 15년 가까이 누드를 그렸다. 쉬지 않고 다이나믹하게 움직여야 하는 누드크로키가 유난히 좋았다고 했다. 빠르면서도 강한 그의 손놀림은 새로운기법인 판화를 민나면서 다른작품으로의 변화가시작된다.. 서경자 작가는 동대학원에서 판화를 전공한 것이 ‘살아오면서 참 잘한 선택’이라 말한다. 그의 수많은 작품이 판화의 기법에서 나왔다. 수십 번을 겹치면서 형태가 점점 드러나는 작품세계 안에는 판화를 했던 사람만이 가능한 터치와 시선이 있다. 서경자 작가는 초기의 누드크로키에서 작품의 모티프가 변화한 것은 자연의 아름다움을 통해 명상의 가능성을 발견한 시점부터다. “봄이면 새싹, 여름에는 진초록, 가을날 은행이 덮인 노란 세상, 겨울의 흰 눈.. 그 모든 것이 명상의 소재로 충분했습니다. 명상에 자연이 들어가고 그 자연에 다시 명상이 덧칠해져서 화사하고 포근한 블루로 완성됐습니다.”라고 말한다. 인간을 그리다가 자연으로, 자연에서 다시 명상으로 옮겨간 그녀의 작품세계. 그것은 신이 그려낸 최상의 곡선, 누드를 그렸던 아티스트였기에 가능한 변화였을지도 모른다. “어쩌면 누드는 침묵의 무늬라는 생각이 듭니다. 사람의 몸이 무늬가 된 것이지요. 사람에서 자연으로 소재가 바뀌면서 명상으로 변화했다고 할 수 있겠네요.” 세상 속도가 가늠할 수 없는 끝을 향해 달려갈수록 더욱 깊고 느린 내면의 숙성으로 들어가는 작업. 그래서 그의 작품은 치유를 향한다.

Resist toward speed! To be happy!
Artist Seo Kyung-Jah finished the art school in Hongik University, and then painted nude for 15 years. She used to love to do nude croquis because it had to be very dynamic to draw that feature. Her teacher, one day, told her to try on engraving art since she has a swift hand-drawing amazingly. Seo Kyung-Jah said it was a great decision to do that at the graduated school. Actually, her many paintings came from the method of engraving. In her work, there are touching, viewing and something possible by someone who has to know skills associated to engraving. That is a shape with lots of layers, which is general for engraving artists. “Sprouts in spring, dark green in summer, yellow world covered by ginkgo leaves in fall and white snow in winter…. All was enough as a subject of meditation. The nature went to the meditation and the nature was brushed with meditation, and finally it was completed to be cozy blue.”
In the beginning, she was drawing human beings and moved to the nature and then she moved back to the meditation in her work. Probably, as she used to draw nude that has great human curves by God, it must have been possible. “I think nude is a pattern of silence. Human body became a pattern. I guess I can say it changed to meditation while the subject was changed from human to nature.” The more the speed of changing in the world, the more she is getting into the depth inside. Therefore, her work is heading to the cure.
세계를 움직인 명상의 무게
서경자 작가의 화면형성은 여느 작가와는 다르게 유일무이하다. 그에게 바탕은 작품을 위한 옥토에 가깝다. 비옥한 옥토에서 아름다운 열매를 이루기 위해 20여회에 가까운흰빛 바탕색을 칠한 후 의도된 그라데이션을 형성한다. 동심원을 연상케 하는 색채의 그라데이션은 발광체에 가까운 형형한 색이 되어 보는 이로 하여금 비움과 채움을 동시에 전해준다. 화이트에서 배어나오는 더없이 아름다운 색감. 시선을 하나로 모으는 무언의 힘. 그것이 바로 서경자 작가의 작품언어이다. 2005년 무렵, 서경자 작가의 작품세계는 세계를 향해 찬란한 꽃을 피웠다. 2005년 북경에서 열린 제2회 중국베이징비엔날레에서 뜨거운 반응을 이끌어냈고 북경미술관에 소장되었다. 2008년 제3회 중국베이징 비엔날레 북경올림픽 초대작가이자 베이징 798예술특구에서의 초대전시회는 중국 베이징TV와 유력일간지 전면에 소개될 만큼 화제가 되었다. 2009년 상해 문화원 초대전에서는 드라마 <꽃보다 남자>에 노출된 작품임이 알려지면서 중국인들의 마음을 사로잡았다. 작품활동을 하는 교수들마저 작품을 원할 정도로 중국에서의 반응은 폭발적이었다. 서경자 작가는 2004년부터 2012년까지 9년에 걸쳐 초대된 프랑스 국립미술협회 Societe National des Beaux Arts, 일본 동경의 명품거리 오모테산도 힐즈, 현대미술의 현주소인 뉴욕 첼시 화랑가에서 열린 초대전시회를 비롯해 23회에 걸친 개인전과, 300여회 국내외 아트페어및그룹전시에서 미술평론가 및 콜렉터들의 극찬을 받아왔다.

Weight of meditation that moves the world
Artist Seo Kyung-Jah created her own style in painting different from others. To her, ground is like rich soil for her work. In order to produce beautiful fruits, she made intended gradation after under-painting 10 to 20 times. A silent power that comes from white color is very beautiful and concentrator. This is her word of work. Around 2005, her work world bloomed towards the world. In 2005, she derived hot attention from people in the 2nd China Beijing Biennale and her works were invited to the 3rd China Beijing Biennale ‘Beijing Olympics’ in 2008 again and she was showed to an exhibition at the Beijing 798 Art District and Beijing ‘9 Art Space’ exhibition, which was a hot topic there as much as she was introduced in an influential Chinese newspaper. 투명한 기(氣)의 흐름, 미지의 세계를 향해
다가오는 봄, 서경자 작가는 중국을비롯한 스위스에서 초대 전시회가 예정되어 있고 2014년 독일에서도 작품을 만날 수 있게 된다. 그는 이제 블루(Blue)의 미학을 돋보이게 하는 레드(Red)의 혼용, 그리고 다양한기법을 이용한 새로운 작품세계를 구상 중이다. 끝없는 명상을 통해 무념무상의 지점을 향하는 부단한 작업으로 캔버스 가득 채워진 푸른 이상향을 소더비와 크리스티에서 만날 날이 기대된다.
서경자 작가는1978년 홍익대학교(서양화전공)를 졸업하고 동대학원(판화전공)을 졸업했다. 2005년 제2회 중국베이징비엔날레(북경) 초대작가이자 2008년 제3회 중국베이징 비엔날레 북경올림픽 초대작가다. 개인전으로는 예술의전당 한가람미술관, 갤러리 팔레드서울 초대전, 상해문화원 초대전시(중국상해문화원), 베이징 798, 선화랑 초대전 등 23회의 국내 개인전을 비롯해 SIPA판화미술제를 비롯 마니프 서울 국제아트페어등 국내외아트페어및그룹전300여회를치뤘다. 그녀의 작품은 중국북경미술관과 중국상해문화원, 국립현대미술관(아트뱅크)에 작품이 소장되어 있으며, 현 한국미술협회, 한국전업미술가협회, 홍익여성화가협회, 세계미술교류협회, 홍익판화가협회, 여류화가협회 회원이며, 프랑스 SNBA 정회원이다.

In the upcoming autumn, she is supposed to have an exhibition in Swiss, Oman as the first Korean artist and even Germany in 2014. She will have another exhibition, ‘Serotonin’, which is suggested by Dr. Lee Si-Hyung who recommended her natural healing by his book,

She finished art school at Hong-Ik University in 1978 and majored in engraving at the same university. In 2005, she showed her works at the 2nd China Beijing Biennale and her works were invited to the 3rd China Beijing Biennale ‘Beijing Olympics’ in 2008 exhibition. For her private exhibitions, Seoul art center, Hangaram Gallery, Gallery Palais de Seoul invitation, the Beijing 798 Art District, Shanghai Culture center invitation exhibition, Gallery Sun invitation are held so far, which is about 23 times, but other group exhibition are nearly 300 times including SIPA engraving painting festival, MANIF SEOUL INTERNATIONAL ARTFIAR etc. Her paintings could be found at China Beijing gallery, Shanghai Culture center, National Contemporary ART Museum (Artbank) and she has a full membership of Korea Art Association, Korean professional Artist Association, Hong-Ik female painter Association, Global Art communication Association, Hong-Ik printmaker Association, Women Artist Association and France SNBA.
