Carving my own destiny, As Disciple of Dr.Walter Unger

Have you ever heard about Dr.Walter Unger, called 'the Living Legend of Hair Transplantation in the field of medical science ?

When it comes to saying about his career, He is currently Clinical Professor at Mt. Sinai Medical School; New York Visiting Professor at Johns Hopkins Medical School, Baltimore, MD; and Associate Professor (Medicine) at the University of Toronto. He is, in addition, the Director of the Cosmetic Dermatologic Surgery Program at Mt. Sinai Medical School in New York.

Aside from his academic and clinical works, He has set up a milestone of world history of dermatology.

Namely Dr. Unger is the author of chapters on hair transplantation in 27 medical texts, has published numerous articles in medical journals and has been invited to deliver scientific papers at medical meetings throughout the world over the past 30 years.

So the global-world has known that it's no accident that his Hair Transplantation has been considered as the Bible for hair transplant surgeons.

Recently one Korean dermatologist MD.PhD, named 'Hangrae Cho', the Director of 'OhKims Dermatologic & Aesthetic Clinic in Ilsan city, one of the satellite cities of Seoul, has been spotlighted in the hair transplantation's area due to his marvellous medicine that no patient never experienced before.

He was a real successor of Dr.Unger, like those relationship between Jesus and his Disciples, as well as a pioneer of hair transplant surgeons in Korea, being in charge of Director of Korean Hair Research Society.

Because his outlook on treatment for patient was totally influenced by Dr.Unger's humanism based-philosophy.

So we had an interview with him to know his own portfolio from dermatologist's point of view, wrapping up what his philosophy for patient was.

Q1) Could you tell us any hidden story about what brought you decide to be a disciple of Dr.Unger ?

A1) When I was a military surgeon, as my duty for military service in Korea, my dream was to study in U.S medical school, taking a foreign trained-doctor's program under the direction of world-wide medical doctor like Dr.Unger.

So I e-mailed him to show my academic aspiration with sincerity(at that time even I felt it's absurd, but I was really serious about my aspiration), talking about my dream in the future, as a dermatologist in the field of hair transplantation.

Very fortunately, I could take a Golden opportunity to be Dr.Unger's trained-doctor by his admission.

Q2) What about your life in New York's Mt.Sinai Medical School ?

A2) I dare to say, it was important era for my character building to be a real medical doctor with humanism & 'patient interest first'-based philosophy.

Let me introduce an anecdote in New York, in which I perceived something important.

One day, early in the moring, I was picking up wastepapers on the floor in hospital. Because nobody there was, and I though it's my responsibility to make the floor clean by gathering paper scraps.

But As soon as Dr.Unger saw my behavior, coming up to me, and just smiled.

Later I could understand his meaning, though I did not know, at that time, why he gave a smile.

It was that he impressed deeply by the unexpected behavior from my own initiative, which enhanced his trust toward me, constructing more lubricated personal relation between the both.

In addition to my mission for patient, my difficulty was how perfectly I have to combine dermatology with art's concept, case by case, for creation of beauty.

Because dermatology is a kind of medical arts.

Q3)What's the keynote of 'Ohkims' medical service, and your philosophy toward patient ?

A3) First of all we have focused on 'fundamental medical theory-based treatment' for patient, and secondly we've drived particular medical service, what's called, 'Humanism & Friendly Counsel-based Service' since the establishment.

And lastly regarding on the medical technology of hairplantation, we are the No 1 in the Asian/Estern world, as well as Korea.

세계 모발이식학계의 살아있는 전설로 불리고 있는 Walter Unger 박사가 항상 주목하고 끊임없는 관심을 가지는 곳이 바로 이곳이다.

일산 정발산역 앞 롯데백화점 별관 3층에는 ‘오킴스’피부과 & 에스테틱‘이 위치하고 있다.

세계 모발이식학계의 살아있는 전설로 불리고 있는 Walter Unger 박사가 항상 주목하고 끊임없는 관심을 가지는 곳이 바로 이곳이다.

이유는 간단하다.

바로 Walter Unger 박사의 한국인 제자이면서 그의 학문을 계승하고 있는 ‘조항래’ 박사가 있기 때문이다.

‘오킴스’의 피부과 의술수준과 기술은 국내보다는 오히려 국제적(國際的)으로 잘 알려져있다. 그렇게 된 원인 역시 매우 간단하다.

대한피부과학회를 이끌고 있는 피부과 의사들의 대부(代父)인 김홍직 박사(중랑‘오킴스’원장)와 대한모발학회의 중추적인 역할을 하고 있는 조항래 박사(일산‘오킴스’원장) 때문이다.

편집국內 취재부가 아닌 국제부 기자가 ‘오킴스’를 취재하게 된 두가지 이유가 있다. 하나는 유명언론사 외국기자들의 ‘오킴스’에 대한 일종의 뉴스가치(News Value)에 대한 그들의 호기심(Curiosity)때문 이었다. 다른 하나는 앞으로 FTA를 통해 미국의료진이 국내로 상륙할 경우, 지금까지 세계적 수준이라 알려진 국내의 스킨케어나 피부치료 기술이 그대로 경쟁력을 유지할 수 있는지에 대한 취재기자 나름대로의 호기심 발동 이었다.

‘국내 피부과의 의료수준은 세계적입니다. 1.2.3등의 순위가 매일마다 바뀔 정도로 미국.일본과 경쟁하고 있습니다. 국내 피부과 전문의들 상당수가 오히려 미국으로 직접 진출하려 합니다. 그만큼 저희 피부과 의사들 대부분은 아마도 미국과의 FTA를 기대하고 있다고 봐야합니다’

조 원장에 따르면, 한국의 에스테틱과 美를 창조하는 기술은 부동의 세계 1위, 피부과 의술은 세계 1위에서 3위를 미국.일본과 더불어 공유한다는 것.

‘사실 한국 피부과 병원으로 중국이나 홍콩.대만등지에서 Love Call이 많이 걸려 옵니다. 즉 한국 피부과의사들의 해외진출을 원하고 있다는 것이죠’

얼마전 대만 최고의 인지도를 자랑하는 Sinogene 병원에서 모발이식 시범을 보여주고 돌아온 조 원장은 이렇게 귀뜸한다.

Unger 박사와의 운명적 만남, 그리고 휴머니즘 의술의 실현

일산 오킴스에는 유명한 치료철학(治療哲學)이 있다. 이른바 ‘보수적 개념의 치료철학’ 이다. 한마디로 Risky한 부분을 철저히 배제(排除)하고 기초의학에 충실한 치료(Fundamental medical theory-based treatment)를 추구한다.

‘피부과는 美를 창조하는 의학예술(Art of Medicine)입니다. 그러나 의학이라는 과학은 인간을 대상으로 합니다. 그러기에 같은 치료라 하더라도 획일적으로 모든 환자들에게 적용하지는 않습니다. 예를들어 어떤 환자가 더 아름답게 보이려고 특정부위 치료를 요구할 경우, 피부과 전문의가 보았을때 위험적 요소(Risky factor)가 내재할 경우, 저희들은 환자들을 설득하거나 다른 쪽으로 상담을 유도 합니다’

Walter Unger 박사와의 운명적인 만남, 그리고 스승과 제자의 관계를 거치면서 조항래 원장의 환자에 대한 의사로서의 철학과 사명감은 그때 이미 형성 되었다.

‘환자를 사람(Human-being)으로 보고 그를 즐겁게 해주면서 의학을 통해 공통교감(共通交感)을 만들라’는 Unger 박사의 가르침을 지금까지 그는 묵묵히 실천하고 있다.

취재를 하는 동안 기자는 그가 미국 뉴욕의 Mt.Sinai Medical School에서의 국제수련의과정은 물론, 한국인으로는 처음으로 Unger 박사의 수제자가 되기까지의 여러 이야기를 접할 수 있었다.

휴머니즘을 기반으로한 그의 치료철학은 그가 한국의 의사라기보다는 코스모폴리탄(Cosmopolitan)的 차원에서의 ‘의술을 통한 美의 창조자’로 변신시켰다.

노벨 의학상 수준을 넘나드는 세계적 석학 Unger 박사의 유일한 한국인 수제자 ‘조항래’원장, 그리고 의사로서의 치료철학과 환자에대한 휴머니즘적 접근, 이 모든 것이 Dynamic Korea의 숨은 원동력으로 평가받기를 기대해 본다.

그리고 일산 ‘오킴스’ 조항래 원장의 앞으로의 행보도 국제부에서는 계속 주시할 것이다.
